28. Aug. 2023 · Truman Orders Desegregation of Armed Forces. On July 26, 1948, President Harry S. Truman issued an executive order to desegregate the armed forces. Executive Order 9981 created the Committee on Equality of Treatment and Opportunity in the Armed Services. There was great resistance to this order among Army officers.
