Grubs Eltern ließen sich 1974 scheiden, als er etwa sieben Jahre alt war. Goodall blieb bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 2002 mit ihrem Ex-Mann befreundet.
In 1967 they had a son Hugo Eric Louis, affectionately known as "Grub". They were divorced in 1974 but remained friends. On 23 March 1978, in Banjul, Gambia, Hugo married Theresa Rice. They were divorced 19 January 1984.

Hugo van Lawick was a renowned wildlife filmmaker and photographer, who documented the lives of chimpanzees, wild dogs, hyenas and other African animals. He was the husband of Jane Goodall and the father of Hugo Eric Louis van Lawick, born in 1967.
