    whatever — Jack Bauer, "Day 7: 7:00am-8:00am"

Jack Bauer (born February 18, 1966) was a retired American serviceman and a former federal agent, who was responsible for saving numerous American citizens from potentially devastating terrorist attacks on more than one occasion.

He took a leadership role in various covert and undercover missions, and served as both CTU Director and Director of Field Operations at CTU Los Angeles. His dedication to keeping U.S. citizens safe allowed him to thwart the terrorist acts throughout all 9 Days; but his dedication led him to make some deep personal sacrifices. Jack lost his wife in the final hour of Day 1, was forced to fake his death and live in hiding (at the cost of a stable relationship with his daughter) in the aftermath of Day 4, sacrificed his freedom for a period of nearly two years after Day 5, became temporarily infected and debilitated by the Prion variant during Day 7, and ultimately lost his freedom after Day 9. He showed his willingness to sacrifice his life on multiple occasions, but each time his sacrifice ultimately proved to be unnecessary.

Following Day 8, Jack was forced to flee the United States, wanted by both the U.S. and Russian governments for killing the Russian foreign minister and his lead operative and for attempting to assassinate the Russian President involved in a terrorist conspiracy and as retribution for the assassination of his loved one. After four years spent living in hiding in Eastern Europe, Jack resurfaced in London after receiving word of an assassination attempt against his former mentor, President James Heller and a possible prelude to a much more devastating attack. During the course of Day 9, Jack was given a full Presidential pardon for the crimes he committed four years prior, on Day 8, and for any crimes he had committed in assisting President James Heller to stop the drone attacks by Margot Al-Harazi, freeing him of his fugitive status in the United States. However, he later gave himself to the Russians in exchange for his friend Chloe O'Brian.

    Early life

make – Graem Bauer, "Day 6: 12:00pm-1:00pm" Jack Bauer was born in Santa Monica, California on February 18, 1966. His father is Phillip Bauer. (Day 6 Debrief) Jack was never close to his father, nor to his brother Graem; as of Day 6, he hadn't seen either of them in over nine years. He was, however, close to his father's butler and chief servant, Sam. ("Day 6: 10:00am-11:00am") In high school, Jack rode motorcycles and often surfed for fun. He was familiar with Jessica Abrams and Tracy Zigler during this time. ("Day 1: 12:00am-1:00am", "Day 1: 7:00am-8:00am") Jack attended the University of California, Los Angeles and graduated with a degree in English Literature. Later, he received a Master of Science degree in Criminology and Law from UC Berkeley. (Findings at CTU) In his late teens, Jack was in a relationship with Marilyn, but broke it off when he left to join the military. ("Day 6: 2:00pm-3:00pm") He later met Teri, a Los Angeles graphic artist, and the two were soon married. The couple's daughter and only child, Kimberly, was born fifteen years prior to Day 1. (Findings at CTU)

    Military and law enforcement career

Jack's family expected him to become a leader in BXJ Technologies, his father's company, but he chose his own course, causing him to become estranged from Phillip and Graem. ("Day 6: 3:00pm-4:00pm") Jack joined the United States Army, completing the Special Forces Operations Training Course and graduating from the John F. Kennedy School of Special Warfare. He served as an instructor for the Special Forces Robin Sage Exercises and the "Q" Course Phase III Training programs, and met Richard Walsh, who would become something of a mentor to him. Through a third-party invitation by Walsh, Jack joined the elite 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta, commonly known as Delta Force, and rose to the rank of captain. While in Delta, he took part in classified missions all over the world, many of them in the Balkan countries in eastern Europe. These included Operation Closed Coffin in Hac, Operation Lost Paradise in Chechnya, Operation Downtown in Pristina, and Operation Collegiate in Belgrade. Bauer's decorations included the Purple Heart and Silver Star. Eventually, Jack ended his term of active duty, but remained a reserve officer in Delta Force and was periodically reactivated to lead critical missions. (Findings at CTU, Operation Hell Gate) While in the Green Berets, Bauer saw action in the Persian Gulf region alongside James Ricker, whose life he saved during an engagement in Damascus. ("Day 8: 1:00pm-2:00pm") During his army career, Jack served in the same unit as Carl Benton, with whom he became close friends, and whose life he saved on multiple occasions. (24: Redemption) After his term of duty, Jack attended the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department Special Weapons and Tactics school and joined the Los Angeles Police Department as a SWAT specialist, where he worked with Frank Castalano and Nat Greer. (Trojan Horse)

    Counter Terrorist Unit

Some years before Day 1, Richard Walsh and his colleague Christopher Henderson invited Jack to join the Counter Terrorist Unit, a specialized CIA program Walsh had helped spearhead that investigated and neutralized domestic terrorist threats. At the time, Jack had been working "on loan" to the CIA when a lead on the notorious Abdul Rahman Yasin, architect of the 1993 World Trade Center attack, led him to Los Angeles and into the middle of one of CTU's major investigations. Despite his initial skepticism, Jack took part in the unit's successful effort to stop Yasin's planned bombing of the inter-faith Unity Conference, attended by Pope John Paul II and other major religious figures. During this mission, he first met and worked with Nina Myers and Tony Almeida, as well as analyst Jamey Farrell. Ultimately, Jack accepted Walsh and Henderson's offer to join the agency, where he would later take a central role in preventing many more devastating terrorist attacks. Jack became close to Henderson, under whom he served in the agency's Field Operations division. (Trinity) On Jack's first official day of employment, he was assigned to protect Moira O'Neal, a defector from the Irish Republican Army who had turned herself over to Division. Jack and a CTU team escorted O'Neal to a CIA safe house near Kingman, Arizona, where they came under attack by a crew led by Tim McGinnis. After an intense firefight and chase that lasted several hours and resulted in the loss of the rest of the team, Jack (with O'Neal's help) managed to take out the attackers, killing McGinnis with the last bullet in his gun. (One Shot) Over the next few years, Jack took part in many more anti-terrorism operations, several of which were declassified following the 9/11 attacks. (Operation Hell Gate) He was the Section Captain of the Hotel Los Angeles attack in 1998, and the Team Leader of Operation Proteus in 2000. ("Day 9: 11:00am-12:00pm") After working together for many years, Jack and Henderson's relationship soured when Jack was poised to be a key witness in an internal affairs investigation regarding misappropriated CTU funds. Henderson, who had conspired with his subordinate Peter Jiminez in stealing the missing money, took advantage of a deep-cover mission by Jack and Ryan Chappelle to attempt to have Bauer killed before he could implicate them. This effort failed, and Jiminez was framed as the sole party behind the missing funds. (Chaos Theory) Some time later, Jack played a key role in building the case that Henderson had sold classified information to defense contractors, resulting in his firing from CTU and the end of their friendship. ("Day 5: 4:00pm-5:00pm") A year before Day 1, Jack built a case against Seth Campbell, and two other CTU agents and had all three arrested for taking bribes. This was a controversial operation that earned Jack the scorn and distrust of many at CTU, including Tony Almeida and Teddy Hanlin. Campbell's wife Judy ultimately committed suicide from the shame and the pressure of raising their four children alone. ("Day 1: 5:00pm-6:00pm") By Day 1, Jack attained the rank of Director of CTU Los Angeles, with Nina Myers serving as Chief of Staff. ("Day 1: 12:00am-1:00am")

    Teri Bauer

Teri was Bauer's wife during Day 1. Sometime before, Jack and Teri were separated, with Jack living else where and Teri living at their house with Kim. Both eventually reconciled and Jack moved back in. During the events of Day 1, Jack risked everything to save Teri and their daughter. When Teri revealed that she was pregnant with his second child, Jack was became extremely happy to the point of tears. While Teri managed to survive most of the day's events, she was tragically shot and killed by Nina Myers. Her death and the loss of their unborn child would haunt Jack for years, causing him to quit from CTU and go into a depression. It wasn't until the events of Day 2 that he put aside his grief and went back to work at CTU, but even then he was still affected by her loss. This eventually led him to offer Kim a job at CTU as he did not want to lose her as he did Teri, going so far as to warn Chase Edmunds, his partner and Kim's boyfriend at the time, that he didn't want to lose her like he did Teri. Even after he killed her assailant, Nina Myers, Jack would continue to feel responsible for Teri's death.

    Kim Bauer

Kim was Jack's daughter. Her loyalty seemed to lie more with her father when her parents were separated. She had been living with her mother during their separation and when her mother was murdered, she and Jack from thereon had a very strained relationship. During Day 2, Kim's experiences made her realize how much she loves him, and during Day 3 Jack took him to work at CTU. Jack was against her relationship with Chase Edmunds, but accepted it, and after the events of Day 3, Kim relationship with Jack got better. But when Jack faked his death at the end of Day 4, Kim didn't know the truth, and fell into depression. During Day 5, Jack revealed himself to her alive, but Kim said she can't have him in his life, which she would later regret. During Day 7, she traveled to Washington D.C. to see her father's trial, and through Renee Walker she eventually met him. She apologized to him about, what she said during Day 5, and was willing to help him after he was infected with the prion variant, but he wouldn't let her endanger herself for him. However, Kim went through with therapy, saying that she was not ready to let him go, mainly because she wanted her daughter, Teri to have a grandfather. During Day 8, Kim asked if Jack would move back to L.A. with them. He happily accepted, but out of Kim's urging, he remained behind to solve the day's crisis. This was the last time Kim saw Jack alive.

    Tony Almeida

Tony was Jack's comrade prior to Day 7, where Tony became a terrorist. Their relationship was rocky at first due to them having both had a history with the same woman (Nina Myers) but their bond grew stronger when it was revealed that Nina was a terrorist. Jack and Tony crossed heads frequently but by Day 4 Jack considered him the only person he could trust. Tony was killed, revived in secret, and then became a mercenary in order to kill Alan Wilson for his role in the murders of Michelle Dessler and their unborn child.

    Behind the scenes

•Originally, the character's name was going to be Jack Barrett. •Numerous actors auditioned for the role of Jack Bauer, including 24 actors Carlos Bernard and Richard Burgi. When Sutherland was first suggested by Stephen Hopkins, Robert Cochran initially felt he was too young, and that no one would believe he had a teenage daughter. He changed his mind when he realized that Sutherland in fact did have a thirteen-year-old daughter at the time. (E! True Hollywood Story: 24) •Bauer is German for "Farmer". •It is mentioned on several occasions that Jack blew the whistle on several agents at CTU who were laundering money before Day 1. In the original draft of the pilot script, this was supposed to occur at another agency (not CTU) and Richard Walsh brings Jack in because he thought Jack's actions were courageous. •According to Howard Gordon, Day 8: 3:00pm-4:00pm was originally scripted to end with Jack's death. •With regards to Jack's actions towards the end of Season 8, Howard Gordon stated that it "was very much designed from the beginning. How it would end, however, was something that was really unknown. I saw a little bit further ahead than I generally do, and we wanted to knit Jack and Renee together, only to take them apart, and for that to have a really profound effect on Jack. That’s about as far as we knew in the broad strokes. How that was going to happen, and how it would impact Allison Taylor and Chloe — those were late-to-the-party additions that I think helped bolster that initial idea." •During the events of Day 1: 6:00pm-7:00pm a photograph in the Bauer home displays Jack in his army uniform during his time in the service. A closer examination reveals that Jack is actually wearing a United States Marine Corps officer's uniform. The picture itself, is of actor Kiefer Sutherland who played Lieutenant Jonathan Kendrick in the 1992 movie "
