John Whiteside Parsons (born Marvel Whiteside Parsons; October 2, 1914 – June 17, 1952) was an American rocket engineer, chemist, and Thelemite occultist. Associated with the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Parsons was one of the principal founders of both the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the Aerojet Engineering Corporation .

Jack Parsons, an explosives expert, pioneer in rocket propulsion, and follower of the thelemic magic of Aleister Crowley (1875-1947), was born Marvel Whiteside Parsons, the son of Marvel and Ruth Whiteside Parsons in Los Angeles, California, on October 2, 1914.
The series is based on the biography of Thelemic magician and scientist Jack Parsons (Strange Angel: The Otherworldly Life of Rocket Scientist John Whiteside Parsons by George Pendle), and was created by Mark Heyman, who also executive produces and writes for the show.
