18. Juli 2020 · That man was John Henry Holmes, an engineer, Quaker and inventor. Holmes was born in Newcastle on 6 June 1857 and grew up first of all in Gateshead and then in Jesmond. His father was a ‘paint and color manufacturer, glass and oil merchant’ with his own factory.
Onward development of Henry's work in U.S.S.R created a magnetic switch [invented in 1922] in a glass vial by the Russian Professor V. Kovalenkov and became what is known as the Reed Switch [refined 16 years later by Bell Telephone Laboratories [1938]].
