Introduction: Undergraduate medical electives are short periods of self-directed learning in a professional setting undertaken by medical students towards the end of their undergraduate studies. A significant number of students go abroad for their electives, including to low and middle-income countries (LMICs).

Medical elective placements. Medical elective placements are arranged through Imperial College. These placements last 2–6 weeks (6 weeks maximum) and applicants must be in their penultimate or final year of medical school to be eligible.
