It is infamous for previously hosting Lennox Castle Hospital, Scotland's "largest institution for people with learning disabilities". The castle was built between 1837 and 1841 by David Hamilton for John Lennox Kincaid, on the Lennox of Woodhead Estate, replacing Kincaid House.
Geschichte. Mitglieder des Clans Kincaid of that Ilk erbauten im heutigen Milton of Campsie in den 1810er Jahren ihren Stammsitz Kincaid House. Der Nachfahre John Lennox Kincaid ließ ab 1837 wenige Kilometer westlich am Fuß der Campsie Fells Lennox Castle errichten.

Glasgow Corporation bought the castle, along with 494 ha (1222 acres) of the estate, from the family for £25,000 in 1927 to serve as a hospital for the mentally-ill. New buildings were erected in the grounds to accommodate 600 males and 600 females in separate sections, each comprising a dining hall, kitchen, workshop and ten dormitory blocks.
