    The ISO 3166 is a member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and refers to a standardized system for encoding geographical units. Appropriate standards are comprised of three parts for encoding: 1. certain countries and dependent territories (ISO 3166-1) 2. country subunits (ISO 3166-2) 3. former countries (ISO 3166-3)

    Country codes denote shortcuts in the form of letters and numbers; the basis of which one can identify certain countries (for example, "CH" for Switzerland or „AF“ for Afghanistan) that are used for adminstration or management, for example.

    Country codes are used to identify and recognize certain countries or states (in the form of abbreviations) in order to differentiate and separate these from each other. Furthermore, the appropriate country code provides bureaucratic relief and quick recognition.

    Country codes are used in the areas of management, communications (mainly international), product labeling, in sports and in the transport. The country codes for administrative affairs are guided by the relevant International Organization for Standardization 3166 (ISO).

    Corresponding country codes can be found in the ISO 3166-1 and are listed as two and three-letter abbreviations (for example, RS for Serbia)). Countries are marked accordingly herein using capital letters.

    The ISO 3166-1 ranks all the countries of the world and their codes in alphabetical order in the form of country codes. The abbreviation is often comprised of letters of the respective country name, such as in Portugal „PT“, Malaysia „MY“, Japan „JP“ or Bolivia„BO“.
