Adelsfamilie stammend, wuchs er am königlichen Hof in Pavia auf; die dort genossene Ausbildung sollte zur Grundlage seiner späteren diplomatischen, literarischen und historiographischen Fähigkeiten werden. Liutprand wurde Mönch und empfing die Priesterweihen.
