Geboren wurde Lucien Bonaparte als dritter Sohn von Carlo Buonaparte (1746-1785) und Letizia Ramolino (1750-1836) am 21. Mai 1775 im korsischen Ajaccio unter dem Namen Luciano Buonaparte. Seine älteren Brüder waren Joseph und Napoleon. Später erblickten seine Geschwister Elisa, Louis, Pauline, Caroline und Jérôme das Licht der Welt.
Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte, 2nd Prince of Canino and Musignano (24 May 1803 – 29 July 1857) was a French naturalist and ornithologist. Lucien and his wife had twelve children, including Cardinal Lucien Bonaparte.
