The society is governed by its Council, which is chaired by the society's president, according to a set of statutes and standing orders. The members of Council and the president are elected from and by its Fellows, the basic members of the society, who are themselves elected by existing Fellows.

List of fellows of the Royal Society. More than 8,000 people have been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, UK, since the inception of the Royal Society in 1660. The Royal Society publishes a database of current fellows [1] and a database of past fellows. [2]

The Council of the Royal Society can recommend members of the British royal family for election as Royal Fellow of the Royal Society. As of 2023 there are four royal fellows: Charles III, elected 1978; Anne, Princess Royal, elected 1987; Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, elected 1990; William, Prince of Wales, elected 2009
