Alliance editor Caroline Hartnell met Annie Lennox and her husband Dr Mitchell Besser, who founded mothers2mothers, an organization that helps prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV, at the UBS Global Philanthropy Forum, held in late November in Switzerland.
Mitchell Besser is a doctor who founded mothers2mothers, a program that trains and employs HIV-positive moms to support other moms in Africa. He shares his story and vision at TED, where he challenges the stigma and stereotypes around HIV/AIDS.
In sub-Saharan Africa, HIV infections are more prevalent and doctors scarcer than anywhere else in the world. With a lack of medical professionals, Mitchell Besser enlisted the help of his patients to create mothers2mothers -- an extraordinary network of HIV-positive women whose support for each other is changing and saving lives.
