Clift miał bliźniaczą siostrę Robertę (Ethel) [5] oraz brata, Williama Brooksa Jr., który miał nieślubnego syna z aktorką Kim Stanley [6].

Montgomery Clift wird nach seiner Zwillingsschwester Roberta im Oktober 1920, als Sohn des Bankers William Clift und seiner Frau Ethel geboren. Montgomery, der nur Monty genannt wird, seine Zwillingsschwester Roberta und der 18 Monate ältere Bruder Brooks, wachsen zunächst in durchaus wohlhabenden Verhältnissen auf.
