Von 1949 bis 1950 lebte Spero in Paris und studierte dort an der École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris und im Atelier von André Lhote. Von 1951 bis zu seinem Tod 2004 war Nancy Spero mit dem Maler Leon Golub verheiratet, mit dem sie in einem gemeinsamen Atelier in Greenwich Village zusammenarbeitete.
Soon after her return to the United States in 1950, she married Leon Golub, and the two artists settled in Chicago. From 1956 to 1957, Spero and Golub lived and collaborated in Italy, while raising their three sons.
Drawing upon sources as diverse as prehistoric legends, classical art, modern literature, and contemporary politics, Nancy Spero has created both intimate and epic-scale works which address many of the crucial aesthetic and cultural issues of our era in a bold and captivating manner. Text and images are non-linear in Spero’s work.
She studied painting at both the Art Institute of Chicago and at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and married the artist Leon Golub in 1950, with whom she would often collaborate.
