Founded on Christmas Day in 1890 under the Morrill Act as Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College, Oklahoma State University has grown through its traditions and culture to become one of America’s premier land-grant universities.
Oklahoma State University was founded as Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College on Dec. 25, 1890, just 20 months after the Land Run of 1889. When the first students assembled for class on Dec. 14, 1891, no buildings, books or curriculum existed. Land-grant universities were made possible by the Morrill Acts of 1862, 1890 and 1994.
