Am 2. Mai 1999 starb Oliver Reed in Valletta auf Malta während der Dreharbeiten zu dem Film Gladiator an einem Herzinfarkt. Für verbleibende Szenen, für die er selbst nicht mehr zur Verfügung stand, wurde mit Hilfe von Computeranimation sein Bild aus bereits vorhandenem Filmmaterial nachträglich eingefügt.
