8. Sept. 2021 · Christiania was established as a replacement of the old city of Oslo in 1624, after a huge fire had swept through the original city. Oslo stood a few kilometres to the east, but King Christian IV wanted the city to be closer to the Akershus Fortress. The ruins of the old city still stand at the suburb called ‘Gamle Oslo’.
After being destroyed by a fire in 1624, during the reign of King Christian IV, a new city was built closer to Akershus Fortress and named Christiania in honour of the king. It became a municipality ( formannskapsdistrikt) on 1 January 1838. The city functioned as the capital of Norway during the 1814–1905 union between Sweden and Norway.

Am 17. Mai 1814 wurde Oslo, welche damals noch Stadt Christiania hieß, die Hauptstadt von Norwegen, doch erst zwischen 1850 und 1900 stieg die Bevölkerung auf 230.000 Einwohner an. Seither zog es immer wieder zahlreiche Menschen aus aller Welt nach Oslo, um dort zu leben und zu arbeiten.
