Das Protein p53 ist in vielen Typen von entarteten Zellen in erhöhter Menge messbar. Es ist auch in normal wachsenden Zellen vorhanden. In ruhenden Zellen ist p53 jedoch kaum oder gar nicht zu finden. In vielen Tumortypen ist das für p53 kodierende Gen mutiert.
