The first element to be discovered by radiochemical analysis, polonium was discovered in 1898 by Pierre and Marie Curie, who were investigating the radioactivity of a certain pitchblende, a uranium ore.

Germanium, antimony and polonium are sometimes also included, although the first two are commonly recognised as metalloids.

Im Jahre 1903 erhielt er gemeinsam mit seiner Frau Marie Curie eine Hälfte des Physik-Nobelpreises für „ihre gemeinsamen Arbeiten über die von H. Becquerel entdeckten Strahlungsphänomene“.
