Erreger & Übertragung. Die Kinderlähmung wird durch Enteroviren (Poliovirus Typ 1, Typ 2 und Typ 3) verursacht. Diese werden durch Schmierinfektion, das heißt durch Berührungen, übertragen. Auch eine Übertragung über die Atemluft als so genannte Tröpfcheninfektion oder über durch Fäkalien verunreinigtes Wasser ist möglich.
Die Kinderlähmung ist eine hochinfektiöse Viruskrankheit. Der Fachbegriff lautet Poliomyelitis, kurz Polio. Auslöser der Erkrankung sind sogenannte Polioviren. Kinderlähmung war vor der Verfügbarkeit von Polio-Impfstoffen weltweit verbreitet. Die Erkrankung kommt derzeit noch in einigen Ländern mit schlechten hygienischen Verhältnissen vor.

Poliomyelitis / Kinderlähmung. Die Poliomyelitis ist noch nicht weltweit ausgerottet, obwohl man diesem Ziel nahe ist. Deshalb muss auch in Polio-freien Ländern weiterhin dagegen geimpft werden. Je nach Reiseziel ist eine Auffrischimpfung auch nach dem Kindesalter nötig. Die Schweiz gilt seit Anfang der 1990er Jahre als poliofrei.
