Rainier III (Rainier Louis Henri Maxence Bertrand Grimaldi; 31 May 1923 – 6 April 2005) was Prince of Monaco from 1949 to his death in 2005. Rainier ruled the Principality of Monaco for almost 56 years. Rainier was born at the Prince's Palace of Monaco, the only son of Hereditary Princess Charlotte and Prince Pierre.

Rainier III was the son of a French aristocrat and a princess who had a dark secret. He inherited Monaco from his father, who was a closeted homosexual and a liar. He had a turbulent relationship with his mother, who was a gambler and an affair-seeker. He had no permanent home and no legitimacy. He was a fighter and a lover who met Grace Kelly, but their romance was short-lived.
