Roberta Metsola won the election in the first voting round, where she received an absolute majority of 458 votes out of 690 cast in the remote secret vote, among three candidates.

18. Jan. 2022 · The European Parliament has elected conservative Maltese lawyer Roberta Metsola as president after the death of office-holder David Sassoli. She is the first woman in 20 years to hold the post.
Following that, she joined the team of the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, as a legal advisor. Metsola was first elected to the European Parliament in 2013, becoming one of Malta's first female Members of the European Parliament. She was re-elected as an MEP in 2014.
