San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) was a private college of contemporary art in San Francisco, California. Founded in 1871, SFAI was one of the oldest art schools in the United States and the oldest west of the Mississippi River. Approximately 220 undergraduates and 112 graduate students were enrolled in 2021.

The San Francisco Art Institute Archives is an institutional collection that documents the history of SFAI, its curriculum, administration, students, faculty, exhibitions and events, as well as the history of some closely-affiliated organizations such as the San Francisco Art Association and the San Francisco Museum of Art (precursor to SFMOMA).
The mission of the SFAI Legacy Foundation + Archive is to protect, sustain, and carry into the future the legacy of the San Francisco Art Institute–a legacy of bold, experimental artistic practice and innovative scholarly inquiry.
