Scarborough Fair (fair) During the late Middle Ages the seaside town of Scarborough, in Yorkshire, was an important venue for tradesmen from all over England. It was host to a huge 45-day trading event starting on 15 August, and continuing until the end of September. [1]
Im Jahre 1253 wurde der Jahrmarkt Scarborough Fair durch einen königlichen Erlass eingeführt und über 500 Jahre hinweg jährlich abgehalten. Die sechswöchige Handelsmesse zog Kaufleute aus ganz Europa an. Bis heute ist der Brauch in dem gleichnamigen englischen Volkslied eines unbekannten Autors überliefert.

The Scarborough Fair. Established under Royal Charter in 1253, the original Scarborough Fair drew merchants from as far away as the Ottoman Empire to ‘sell goods of true worth’ to hundreds of visitors each August and September. The fair survived for 430 years, taking place for the last time in 1788.
