Okt. 2019 · Nadat zondag bekend werd dat de Belgische premier Charles Michel (Mouvement Reformateur, MR) is opgevolgd door partijgenote Sophie Wilmès, kwam algauw het nieuws opgang dat zij een Joodse achtergrond heeft. De eerste vrouwelijke premier van België is tevens Franstalig en 44 jaar oud.

De moeder van Sophie Wilmes behoort namelijk tot de groep van de Asjkenazische Joden, een cultureel-religieuze groep binnen het jodendom naast bijvoorbeeld de Sefardische Joden of de Mizrahi Joden.
Sophie Wilmès (French pronunciation: [sɔfi wilmɛs]; born 15 January 1975) is a Belgian politician who served as the prime minister of Belgium from 2019 to 2020. She later served as minister of foreign affairs from 2020 to 2022.
Sophie Wilmes will temporarily resign to care for her husband who has been diagnosed with brain cancer.

Wilmes, a mother of four from the Brussels region, replaced Charles Michel on Sunday in the top government post.
