The Social Democratic Party of Germany (German: Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands, [zoˈtsi̯aːldemoˌkʁaːtɪʃə paʁˌtaɪ ˈdɔʏtʃlants]; SPD, German pronunciation: [ɛspeːˈdeː] ⓘ) is a centre-left social democratic political party in Germany. It is one of the major parties of contemporary Germany.

Als erste Vorläufer der Partei gelten der 1863 gegründete Allgemeine Deutsche Arbeiterverein und die 1869 gegründete Sozialdemokratische Arbeiterpartei, die sich 1875 zur Sozialistischen Arbeiterpartei Deutschlands zusammenschlossen.

Historic figures: Willy Brandt, Federal Chancellor from 1969 to 1974. Helmut Schmidt, Federal Chancellor from 1974 to 1982. Gerhard Schröder, Federal Chancellor from 1998 to 2005.
The SPD has been the ruling party at several points, first under Friedrich Ebert in 1918. The party was outlawed in Nazi Germany but returned to government in 1969 with Willy Brandt. Meanwhile, the East German branch of the SPD was merged with the ruling Socialist Unity Party of Germany.
