9. Juni 2017 · There is no possibility of "stern" meaning "steering gear" unless the text dates from the 17th century or earlier. Out of curiosity I did a Google search for the phrase "from aft to stern". I was astonished to find as many as just over 80 examples, but noted that Google reported "About 81 results (0.97 seconds)" - that makes a change from "About 669,000 results (1.16 seconds)".

4. Sept. 2018 · Mock means pretend or imitation. If you are really being stern with her it's not mock-stern, whether it's usual or not. In your excerpt it's mock-stern because she doesn't mean it seriously - she's pretending to be stern. She only pretends because of what teddy said: the reality of their relationship is such that [real] sternness is impossible.
