A legislature is a deliberative assembly with the legal authority to make laws for a political entity such as a country, nation or city. They are often contrasted with the executive and judicial powers of government. Laws enacted by legislatures are usually known as primary legislation.
The ordinary legislative procedure starts with the submission of a legislative proposal to the European Parliament and the Council. The ordinary legislative procedure currently applies in 85 defined policy areas covering the majority of the EU's areas of competence.
