Established in 1868 by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, the university now has additional campuses in Garching, Freising, Heilbronn, Straubing, and Singapore, with the Garching campus being its largest. The university is organized into seven schools, and is supported by numerous research centers.

The Historical Archive of the TUM collects, makes accessible and preserves analogue and digital records of lasting value on the history of the 1868 founded Technical University of Munich. The focus hereby is on bringing the TUM’s history to life in its scientific, cultural, politic and societal contexts.
Founded by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, its original purpose was “to bring the igniting spark of science” to the commercial and industrial world. Today, our university ranks among the very best in Europe.

In 1877 the Munich Polytechnic School is renamed to Technische Hochschule München (Munich Technical University or THM). After complicated negotiations with both the Bavarian and Prussian Ministries of Education the Munich Technical University is granted the right to confer doctorates in 1901 and is thus put on a par with Munich University.
