The band’s original lineup consisted of lead vocalist and lead guitarist John Fogerty, his brother rhythm guitarist Tom Fogerty, bassist Stu Cook, and drummer Doug Clifford. These four had played together since 1959, first as The Blue Velvets and later as The Golliwogs before settling on the name Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1967.

He was also a member of Southside Johnny’s Asbury Jukes, in which he was the band’s chief songwriter for the group’s first three albums. He is Bruce Springsteen’s closest friend and confidant. He left the E Street Band in 194 to pursue a solo career in which he became known as Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul. He would later rejoin the E Street Band in the 1990s.
