Nach Georg Büchners Dramenfragmenten aus dem Jahr 1837 schuf Tom Waits eine als "art musical" bezeichnete Version über den einfältigen Soldaten Woyzeck, der, gedemütigt, ausgenutzt, getäuscht und zu medizinischen Zwecken missbraucht, nach dem Treuebruch seine Geliebte umbringt.
