Like search costs, the lack of price transparency may increase prices and lead to price dispersion. This paper empirically evaluates how price transparency a ects markups and welfare in the U.S. health care market. I estimate a demand model that explicitly accounts for consumer uncer-tainty about prices.

30. Jan. 2019 · A study by Ethan Lieber at University of Notre Dame found that patients who use Compass, one of these price transparency tools, save 10 to 17 percent on medical care. A separate study of a similar tool, Castlight, also found evidence that using the tool led to sizable savings.
17. Feb. 2023 · This analysis suggests price transparency for shoppable services may yields significant savings between $17.6 to $80.7 billion by 2025. Consumers may have strong incentives to shop with the rise in the use of high deductibles, health plans, and health savings accounts.
