The proposed definition shows both theoretical and practical significance for urban planning and management.

  4. The conceptual framework we propose to guide future research on women's use of public space consists of: (1) an understanding of public spaces as part of a network; (2) the concept of publicness; and (3) an analysis of the essential characteristics of public spaces and their use.
