In the biography Vivien Leigh by Hugo Vickers, the author mentions an account David Niven wrote about Vivien’s complete nervous breakdown in Hollywood, 1953. Niven disguises Vivien’s name as “Missie” so as not to reveal her identity (most likely out of respect for their friendship while Vivien was alive). Here is his account of that ...
16. März 2019 · That’s taken me up to…1945 in Laurence Olivier’s stage career. But hey, it’s not a race! Here are some highlights from Box 4 (1935-1937), when Vivien Leigh finally enters the picture. As ever, special thanks to the Viv and Larry Patrons for helping me to afford archival supplies! You guys are the greatest. I hope you enjoy!
That night Laurence Olivier left Vivien Leigh for ever. Like Jill Esmond, Vivien remained in love with Olivier for the rest of her life. “She loved him to the end, no question,” says Tarquin. “She had his photograph by her bed all the time she was with her final partner, Jack Marivale. The love of her life was Larry.
To know Vivien was to love her—to have loved Vivien was also to have been loved by her, and loved with a true devotion and a passionate loyalty that might well put your own wavering emotion to shame. But this is to eulogize, and fashion must prevail. I must begin with Vivien’s faults. If I can think of any. At the moment I can only think of ...
Douglas Fairbanks Jr. - Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier. She passed away presumably at home in Lower Zeals, Wiltshire, of unstated causes at age 81. Many people know of her, but few outside her family and immediate circle seem to know much about her.
4. Apr. 2011 · Vivien Leigh appeared on the programme on September 9, 1952. Unfortunately the audio isn’t available at this time, but it is really interesting to see which songs she chose. I think it reveals she had quite eclectic (aka awesome) yet refined taste in music. I see Vivien and I both share(d) a love for a little Ludwig Van! Vivien’s picks:
19. Apr. 2011 · Vivien loved Tickerage Mill and it was so easy to see why. Tucked away in a little valley amidst woodlands and green pastures, the Mill is so peaceful and extremely beautiful in the spring. A courtyard with a lovely landscaped pond, and a wall covered in wisteria sits on one side of the house. It’s called Vivien’s White Garden.
5. März 2016 · Recently, Lena did some extended research into Durham Cottage, the Oliviers’ love nest in Christchurch Street, Chelsea, west London. Laurence Olivier bought the house (the former coach cottage belonging to the larger Durham House next door) as a London base for he and Vivien Leigh. Using quotes from biographies and excerpts and rare photos ...
3. Feb. 2010 · Vivien Leigh aka Missie. In Confessions of An Actor, Laurence Olivier talks about David Niven and Stewart Granger being there with Vivien during her infamous 1953 breakdown during the filming of Elephant Walk. Because Larry was in Ischia at the time, it took him a few days to get back to Hollywood and collect his wife.
