Left-wing Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD) — Social Democratic Party of Germany (between 1917 and 1922 also called Mehrheitssozialdemokratische Partei (MSPD) – Majority Social Democrats). Founded in 1875, it was one of the earliest Marxist-influenced parties in the world.

The Social Democratic Party of Germany ( SPD ), with its roots in the labouring classes, was the strongest political force from 1919 to 1932. It provided several Chancellors as well as the first President of the Reich, Friedrich Ebert, who served in that office from 1919 to 1925. However, it frequently found itself on the opposition benches too.
Federal elections were held in Germany on 19 January 1919,  although members of the standing army in the east did not vote until 2 February. The elections were the first of the new Weimar Republic, which had been established after World War I and the Revolution of 1918–19, and the first with women's suffrage.
Though the SPD, the Centre Party and the radical right and left wings dominated the republic, several other notable parties were active in the Reichstag and in German society. The increase in political activity is understandable. Germany was a nation in transformation, confronted by many challenges, both internal and external.
