  1. 11. Juni 2021 · Key facts. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death globally. An estimated 17.9 million people died from CVDs in 2019, representing 32% of all global deaths. Of these deaths, 85% were due to heart attack and stroke. Over three quarters of CVD deaths take place in low- and middle-income countries.

Globally, the estimated number of deaths due to CVDs increased from around 12.1 million in 1990 5 (equally distributed between males and females) to 18.6 million (9.6 million males and 8.9 million females) in 2019 (Figure 1). The widespread use of these models could enhance the accuracy, practicability, and sustainability of efforts to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease worldwide.
