The Doobie Brothers wurden 1969 von Tom Johnston, John Hartman, Skip Spence (ex- Moby Grape) und Gregg Murph in Süd-Kalifornien unter dem Bandnamen Pud gegründet. Gregg Murph verließ bald die Band, als Ersatz kam Dave Shogren. 1970 kam noch Patrick Simmons dazu.
