David Ashworth Gates (born December 11, 1940) is a retired American singer-songwriter, guitarist, musician and producer, frontman and co-lead singer (with Jimmy Griffin) of the group Bread, which reached the top of the musical charts in Europe and North America on several occasions in the 1970s.

The band was fronted by David Gates (vocals, bass guitar, guitar, keyboards, violin, viola, percussion) with Jimmy Griffin (vocals, guitar, keyboards, percussion) and Robb Royer (bass guitar, guitar, flute, keyboards, percussion, recorder, backing vocals).
David Gates trat zunächst alleine auf und veröffentlichte 1973 und 1975 eigene Langspielplatten. 1976 rauften sich Gates und Griffin erneut zusammen und Bread konnte im darauffolgenden Jahr mit Lost Without Your Love eine weitere LP veröffentlichen.
