  2. Ron "Pigpen" McKernan was a founding member of the Grateful Dead. On March 3, 1973 he was found dead of a gastrointestinal hemorrhage complicated by years of severe alcohol abuse. Much like Brian Jones, McKernan was one of the early leaders of the band, who steered them towards blues and R&B.
