About the size of it. Although the record books give my birth details as New York, August 1917, I was actually born m 1920. When I went with John Kirby’s band I had to put my age up in order to work—because of the child labour scene. My first instrument was banjo. I wish I’d kept it up; there’s a lot of banjo work around!

After stints with the bands of Tiny Bradshaw and Lucky Millinder he joined the John Kirby band in 1937, one of the most prominent groups in the late ‘30s and early ‘40s.
