9. Jan. 2024 · 5. Dorothy Dandridge—"Cow Cow Boogie" (1942) As noted above, boogie-woogie preceded and influenced jump blues. What's interesting is that country and western artists were also quick to pick up the boogie. "Cow Cow Boogie" was a popular WWII tune that crossed several music genres, as well as a couple of color lines.
Soul/R&B Music. In the music world, the terms rhythm and blues and soul both initially described types of African-American popular music with origins in the 1940s and '50s. However, the terms' definitions have evolved significantly over time, as both categories saw the incorporation of elements of pop and electronic music, among other changes.
However, soul music continued to evolve, informing most subsequent forms of R&B from the 1970s-onward, with pockets of musicians continuing to perform in traditional soul style. 1970s and later Later examples of soul music include recordings by The Staple Singers (such as I’ll Take You There ), and Al Green’s 1970s recordings, done at Willie Mitchell’s’ Royal Recording in Memphis.
