Established in 1968, the Black Artists’ Group (BAG) in St. Louis was one of the nation’s most interdisciplinary in its goal to “make Black people more aware of their creative potential,” in the words of leading member and saxophonist Julius Hemphill. Its aim was to change “our people’s frame of reference from white to Black.”
Between 1967 and 1972, St. Louis was home to an arts cooperative known as the Black Artists’ Group or BAG, which brought together and nurtured local African American experimentalists involved with theater, visual arts, dance, poetry, film, and jazz.
