13. Jan. 2023 · Joseph Howe was a Nova Scotian politician who published a letter accusing the magistrates and police of taking illegal payments from the poor and distressed in 1835. He was acquitted of libel by a jury of his peers, who ignored the judge and the law, and launched his political career. He later became Nova Scotia's first responsible minister and a leader of the Confederation movement.
