Opechancanough (/ oʊ p ə ˈ tʃ æ n k ə n oʊ /; 1554–1646) was paramount chief of the Powhatan Confederacy in present-day Virginia from 1618 until his death. He had been a leader in the confederacy formed by his older brother Powhatan , from whom he inherited the paramountcy.

22. Dez. 2021 · Opechancanough was the paramount chief of Tsenacomoco, a political alliance of Virginia Indians, and led massive assaults against the English colonists in 1622 and 1644. He was the younger brother or cousin of Powhatan, the paramount chief of the Powhatans, and the leader of one of Tsenacomoco's most critical territories. He died in English custody after being captured by John Smith.

Opechancanough war Powhatans Bruder und nach dem Ableben des unschlüssigen Powhatan (1618) kam es im Jahre 1622 zum offenen Kampf. Powhatans Nachfolger, sein Bruder Opechancanough, hatte endlich die Hände frei, nach eigenem Gutdünken mit den frechen Eindringlingen zu verfahren.
Opechancanough gelang die Flucht. 22 Jahre später wurde er gefangen und im Gefängnis von einem Wärter erschossen. Die meisten Siedler wurden während des Indianeraufstands von 1622 entlang des James Rivers getötet. Bis 1630 wurden die britischen Siedlungen sporadisch überfallen.
