He is notable for his role at the Synod of Whitby in 664, which ultimately brought the church in Northumbria into conformity with the wider Catholic Church .

29. März 2024 · Oswiu (born 612—died Feb. 15, 670) was an Anglo-Saxon king of Northumbria from 655 to 670. Oswiu’s father, King Aethelfrith (d. 616), had ruled the two ancient Northumbrian kingdoms of Bernicia and Deira, but after the death of Oswiu’s brother, King Oswald, in 642, Northumbria was again divided, Oswiu assuming control of Bernicia.

Oswiu ( c. 611 –15 February 670), also known as Oswy or Old English: Ōswīg, became the King of Bernicia at the death of his brother Oswald. Later he became the King of Northumbria. When Oswiu defeated and killed Penda of Mercia at the Battle of the Winwaed, he became the seventh bretwalda over the southern English kings.
