Er forschte gemeinsam mit RUTHERFORD über Radioaktivität und Kernumwandlung. 1932 entdeckte er das von RUTHERFORD bereits 1921 vorhergesagte Neutron. 1935 erhielt er dafür Nobelpreis für Physik. CHADWICK war an der Entwicklung der amerikanischen Atombombe beteiligt.
