She didn’t write the song – Sonny Bono can take the credit for that – and she didn’t record it first – Cher did – but for many, her mysterious, spine-tingling interpretation is the definitive version. Two decades later, her father bought it to a new audience when he covered it for his 1981 album, She Shot Me Down.
